Baby and Children Photo Tips

  • Have your spouse or a sibling help keep the baby’s attention and possibly make them laugh.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected things like, wiping drool, a sudden roll over or a fast get away.
  • The best time to take baby pictures is after they have napped, eaten and had a diaper change.
  • Baby’s playtime is a good time if you want a wide-awake, happy child in your pictures.
  • Other pictures taken – during their nap, eating or even when the baby is crying can make cute pictures.
  • Good informal portraits can be made if the baby’s attention is focused on something that moves or makes a noise.
  • Give toddlers a new item they have not seen before.
  • A great look can be obtained with mother and child dressed in the same color.
  • For snack breaks; avoid chocolate and have them drink white grape juice to avoid stains on clothing.
  • Little girls look best without nail polish on finger and toe nails.
  • Head to toe coordination is recommended.
  • Use personal/heirloom touches – stuffed animal, blanket, chair, toys, pearls, etc…

What to Wear

Fashion suggestions and coordinating colors

Wear clothes that you or your children normally wear and that are comfortable. You want to look and feel like yourself. It’s okay to wear clothes that are a little worn. Avoid trendy clothes that may be out of style in a year.

Colors:
Solid colors are best

Avoid large, bold or plaid patterns and bright colors; they draw attention away from the face

Save stronger/dark colors and patterns for accent items (scarves/neckties)

We do not recommend clothing with writing, ornate designs or logos

Dark Tones minimize body size and make your facial features stand out

Light Tones- emphasize body size and white should be worn underneath a sweater or jacket

For a Family Portrait:
Everyone in the same style clothing
Do not mix casual and formal attire
All should be in either long or short sleeves
Choose two domineering colors of clothing

Casual attire – T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, khaki’s, blue jeans

Formal attire – jackets, button down shirts, sweaters, dresses

Necklines:
Scoop or v-neck is best if your neck is short and face is full

Turtleneck or high-necked is best if your neck is longer and face is slender

For a Child:
Head to toe coordination is recommended

Jewelry:
Earrings should not draw focus from your face
Omit a necklace with an ornate dress or top garment

Backdrops:
Light color backgrounds - wear white or light pastel clothing

Darker backgrounds - wear dark clothing for a more formal mood

Hair color and Skin tones:
Light hair and light skin tones usually need a medium to dark backdrop colors

Dark hair and olive/dark skin tones usually need a light to medium backdrop colors

Combination of both light/dark hair and skin tones use medium backdrop colors

Personal Touches:
Use your own props - stuffed animal, blanket, chair, play area, toys
